Natural compounds, hailed as a "natural treasury" in the fields of medicine, pesticides, daily chemicals, skincare, and health products, have triggered an industrial revolution in synthetic biology across various fields and Shanghai is known as the birthplace of Chinese synthetic biology and its related industries.

From applications to industrial platforms, from basic enabling technologies to source technologies, Zhangjiang in Shanghai's Pudong New Area possesses concentrated and highly visible first-mover advantages.

As the southern innovation core of Zhangjiang Science City and the bearing area of Zhangjiang's biopharmaceutical industry, Shanghai International Medical Park has always kept pace with the development of the industry and focused on clinical needs that have not been fully met.

Recently, the Shanghai Zhangjiang synthetic biology innovation center, co-created and co-operated by Zhangjiang Group and the leading domestic synthetic biology team led by academician Zhao Guoping, was officially unveiled at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Zhangjiang Life Science International Innovation Summit.

The center is located on Zhangjiang Gene Island and has functions such as innovation incubation, technological platform, product transformation, angel investment, regulatory science, and display and exchange. 

The center will explore a new model of synthetic biology cultivation and empowerment using technology service as the guide, incubation service as the booster, angel investment as the link, and regulatory science as the support.
