NI, a global provider of automated test, measurement, and analysis solutions, entered the Chinese mainland market in 1998. Its Shanghai-based innovation and development center is extending its technologies into humanoid robotics, neurorehabilitation, semiconductors, energy, and 6G communications, expanding testing capabilities and application scenarios for ecosystem partners.
Pudong also hosts more than 500 regional headquarters of multinational companies. Its industrial ecosystem, innovation networks, and business environment are attracting global companies seeking to develop technologies and products in China in collaboration with local partners.
Several recent initiatives illustrate this trend. French diagnostics company bioMerieux opened its innovation center in November 2025. By the end of May 2026, it had supported five companies nationwide through six cooperation projects.
In the first half of 2026, Belgian materials group Umicore unveiled its China Innovation Center, focusing R&D on fuel cell applications and recycling technologies. Meanwhile, Boehringer Ingelheim opened a new R&D center in Zhangjiang to strengthen early clinical development and external innovation collaboration in China.
