Just a short trip from Shanghai Disney Resort, Chuansha Ancient Town offers a quieter side of Pudong, with a history spanning around 400 years. As one of Shanghai's 11 national historical and cultural towns, it is often called "the root of Pudong culture", preserving Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) city walls, historic residences and traditional performing arts.

Chuansha emerged from the sea around 1,000 years ago, later developing into a walled town and trading hub. Its two historic areas, Zhongshi Street and Liuzao Port, were designated Shanghai historical and cultural areas in 2005. The town received national historical and cultural town status in 2014.

Easily reached via Metro Line 2, the ancient town makes a rewarding cultural stop. Consider setting aside half a day to explore this historic corner of Pudong. Here are some recommended destinations.

Neishidi

This traditional Jiangnan residence, built during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), was the former home of educator Huang Yanpei. Soong Ching-ling and her siblings, T.V. Soong and Soong May-ling, spent part of their childhood here, while scholar Hu Shi also stayed at the residence.

Chuansha ancient city wall

Built in 1557 for defense, the city wall is one of only seven surviving ancient city walls in Shanghai, and the only one open to visitors to climb. 

Chuansha Catholic Church

Located on Zhongshi Street, this Gothic-style church dates back to 1872. Its distinctive blue-and-red brickwork and single bell tower make it a landmark of Chuansha.

Song Ching-ling cultural exhibition center

Opened in 2023, the center traces Soong Ching-ling's early years in Chuansha and her contributions to women's and children's causes.

Chuansha opera art exhibition center

Housed in the former residence of Qing Dynasty physician Chen Caiqin, the center celebrates Chuansha's role in the development of Shanghai opera, particularly its Dongxiang tune.
