China received its first shipment of fresh bananas from Peru on Sept 2, with 19.6 metric tons cleared at Shanghai's Yangshan Port following quarantine approval.

The shipment arrived via the Chancay-Shanghai route. Yangshan Customs worked with the importer in advance, creating a dedicated inspection plan and opening a green channel for imported fruit to ensure efficient clearance.

Chancay Port, a deep-water hub and South America's first smart green port, is a flagship Belt and Road cooperation project between China and Peru. The shipping corridor became fully operational in both directions on Dec 18, 2024. It has since reduced shipping time from 35-40 days to just 23 days and cut logistics costs by more than 20 percent.

As of Sept 1, Shanghai Customs had handled 355,000 tons of import and export cargo via the route, with a near 10-billion-yuan ($1.49-billion) value. The number of cargo categories had also increased from 34 to 75.

In the first seven months of this year, the total import and export value through the route reached 3.35 billion yuan, up 44.7 percent year-on-year, contributing to a 31.1 percent increase in the value of Shanghai's trade with Peru.

Peruvian blueberries, avocados and grapes have also been approved for export to China. In the first seven months, Shanghai imported 41,000 tons of Peruvian fruit, up 4.4 percent from the corresponding period in 2025 and accounting for 87.2 percent of China's total.
