Shanghai ship exports surpass 40 billion yuan in first 7 months
Shanghai's shipbuilding industry is riding a wave of robust growth, with ship exports rising 64.1 percent year-on-year to 40.09 billion yuan ($5.6 billion) in the first seven months of this year.
High-end vessels, including liquid cargo ships and large container ships, accounted for 83.9 percent of the total. Major shipbuilders in Shanghai are operating at full capacity, with order backlogs extending into 2030.
The city has established a comprehensive industrial chain spanning R&D, design, construction, assembly, core component, and supply chain services, positioning itself as a national hub for high-end marine equipment.

One standout project is the QC-Max ultra-large liquified natural gas (LNG) carrier, which began construction on June 9 at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in the Pudong New Area. Certified as the world's largest membrane-type LNG carrier by leading classification societies, the vessel benefits from tailored customs support in its delivery. Pudong Customs has guided the company in setting up processing trade manuals to improve the filing and circulation efficiency of bonded material, with 126 bonded items having been registered by the end of July.
Digital innovation is further boosting efficiency. Hudong-Zhonghua now conducts virtual pre-construction and full-element simulation to enable the early detection of structural interference, process conflicts, and assembly tolerances. Compared with traditional methods, on-site rework has dropped by 40 percent, while pre-construction risk detection coverage has reached 98 percent.
