Visa-free policy boosts South American arrivals to Shanghai
A year after China introduced visa-free entry for citizens of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay, Shanghai ports recorded 81,000 passenger trips from the five countries between June 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026, up 50.5 percent year-on-year. Nearly 70 percent entered under the visa-free policy, highlighting its growing role in driving inbound tourism.

The policy is also reshaping travel patterns. Border inspection officers report that many visitors now go beyond landmarks such as the Bund and Yuyuan Garden, exploring neighborhood cafes, independent boutiques and local markets to experience everyday life and local culture in Shanghai.
A Brazilian traveler surnamed Andre praised the convenience of visa-free travel at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Having visited China more than 20 times, he said the 30-day stay allowance encourages travelers to spend longer periods in the country and explore destinations beyond traditional sightseeing routes.
Business visits are also on the rise. Brazilian entrepreneur Bruno said closer economic ties between China and South America have fueled interest in visiting China. An easier entry process allows businesspeople to observe Chinese companies firsthand and explore cooperation opportunities more efficiently.
Shanghai's integrated development of culture, commerce, tourism, sports and exhibitions continues to attract international visitors. At the eighth China International Import Expo, more than 200 Latin American companies participated, including over 100 from the five visa-free countries, promoting both trade and people-to-people exchanges.
To enhance the travel experience, Shanghai border authorities have introduced targeted inspection procedures, online arrival card services and 24/7 multilingual support through the 12367 immigration hotline, further strengthening Shanghai's position as a leading gateway for inbound tourism.
