A lineup of high-profile British cultural events recently took center stage in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, as a major literary exhibition opened to the public and the BBC Symphony Orchestra returned for a landmark performance, highlighting the area's vibrant cultural scene.

The exhibition Writers Revealed: Treasures from British Collections and the National Portrait Gallery, London opened at the Shanghai Museum East on March 17. It will run through July 13, showcasing 135 exhibits. The collection brings together portraits, manuscripts, first editions, and letters from 82 renowned British writers.

"The exhibition includes world-famous figures such as Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and J.K. Rowling. I believe Chinese audiences will find them fascinating," said Anna Starling, deputy director of the National Portrait Gallery.

The exhibition has been thoughtfully curated. Each writer's name is prominently displayed beside their portrait. Together with famous quotes, representative imagery, and translated manuscripts, these elements build an accessible and engaging space that invites dialogue between visitors and the writers.

On the concert stage, the BBC Symphony Orchestra returned to the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. Led by Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo and joined by French pianist Bertrand Chamayou, the orchestra presented a program that blended historical depth with contemporary forms of expression.

The concert opened with The Welcome Arrival of Rain by British composer Judith Weir, inspired by the Indian monsoon weather system. Chamayou then performed Piano Concerto No 5, also known as The Egyptian, noted for its exotic tones. The performance concluded with Stravinsky's The Firebird, the dramatic style and lyrical folk elements of which created a vivid finale.
