Pudong New Area is advancing a key ecological project as part of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), increasing woodland by 30,600 mu (2,040 hectares), adding 1,370 hectares of green space and establishing 150 parks, bringing the total to 203. The per-capita park green space has reached 13.4 square meters.

The area expanded park access with nearly universal 500-meter service coverage in central areas and widespread 24-hour openings. Pudong New Area also added 1.51 square kilometers of river and lake areas, fully opened the 12.5-kilometer Lujiazui Water Loop, and launched the Expo Water Loop.

Environmental indicators continued to improve. In 2024, the number of good air-quality days reached 90.7 percent, an increase of 1.6 percentage points from 2020. PM2.5 levels declined to 27.5 micrograms per cubic meter, and all surface-water sections met Class III standards or higher.

Park upgrades have advanced, with Jinxiu Cultural Park becoming a standout example of Pudong New Area's greener and more accessible public spaces. The integration of four halls and one park zone has transformed the public space with a focus on ecological sustainability and shared civic functions.

Design teams introduced over 100 adaptive plant species and layered landscapes that combine tall canopy trees, flowering shrubs, and seasonal highlights to create year-round greenery, shaded walking paths, and community-friendly open spaces.

Waterfront renewal has brought new energy. The Five-Loop water network — connecting Lujiazui, World Expo, Zhangjiang town, Nanpu and Huamu (provisional) — is creating a continuous blue-green corridor to support recreation, transportation and community life.

With projects accelerating toward 2027, Pudong New Area plans to create a model district where people and nature peacefully coexist.
