In a significant milestone for Shanghai's aviation sector, Pudong Airport has surged to second place globally in cargo throughput, handling 3.7783 million metric tons in 2024, marking a 9.8-percent year-on-year increase and overtaking Memphis Airport in the United States.

This achievement underscores the airport's robust infrastructure, efficient customs clearance processes, and a continuously optimized aviation logistics ecosystem.

The airport has expanded its route network, adding 10 new destinations, increasing the frequency of 19 existing routes, and restoring eight previously suspended routes, with a particular focus on medium- and long-haul routes and Belt and Road countries. This strategic expansion has not only broadened connectivity but also facilitated smoother trade flows.

Collaboration between Shanghai Airport Authority, airlines, and customs inspection units has been instrumental in elevating the airport's transfer rate to a record high of 15.7 percent in 2024. The airport has also enhanced its logistics hub functions by integrating resources between two terminals, launching a direct logistics model for off-site cargo stations in the Yangtze River Delta region, and implementing streamlined collection procedures for cross-border e-commerce goods.

Infrastructure upgrades have been a cornerstone of Pudong Airport's growth. The ongoing fourth-phase expansion project, T3 Terminal, and supporting facilities are progressing steadily, while the fifth runway has completed environmental verification. Adjacent to the airport, the Shanghai Oriental Hub International Business Cooperation Zone, set to commence operations this year, will serve as a new hub for high-level opening-up and systemic reform, enhancing Shanghai's global competitiveness.

Innovations in international cargo transfer have further boosted Pudong Airport's efficiency. The successful trial of Shanghai's first international mid-route "trans-shipping" operation in March, involving the seamless transfer of electronic goods from Bangkok to the United States via Pudong, marks a breakthrough in international air cargo transfer modes. This initiative allows for more flexible route and carrier selections, reducing transportation costs for enterprises.

As Pudong Airport continues to solidify its position as a leading international aviation hub, it is poised to play a pivotal role in Shanghai's broader vision of becoming a global gateway city. With ongoing infrastructure improvements, route network expansions, and innovative logistics solutions, the airport is well-equipped to meet the growing demands of international trade and contribute to Shanghai's economic prosperity.
