After the phase-IV expansion project is completed in 2028, it is expected to help further enhance interconnectivity in the Yangtze River Delta region, better cater to the public's demand for high-quality transportation, and support the long-term development and operation of airlines. It will cover a combined terminal area of over 1.7 million square meters.

Located south of Terminals 1, 2, and the satellite terminal, Terminal 3 is designed to handle 50 million passenger trips. The outline of the buildings echoes the design of the existing terminals, representing the spirit and character of Shanghai's modern transportation hub.

To minimize transfer times for the passengers, the two main buildings of Terminal 3 will be connected by an X-shaped corridor. Walking distance from the security check to the gates will be about 6-8.5 minutes. Ninety contact stands, including 31 convertible ones, will be set up in the terminal, ranking it first among domestic airports.

Other highlights of the new terminal include smart technology, low-carbon design, and a pleasant ecological environment. Passengers will be able to enjoy full self-service check-in, baggage consignment, security check, and boarding services. Domestic passengers exiting the country will have the option of going through customs via facial recognition.
