In another effort to enhance port capabilities, a new intelligent and eco-friendly container port has emerged following the fourth phase of Yangshan Port in Shanghai's Pudong New Area. On Aug 7, the first phase of the city's Luojing Port officially commenced operations, aiming to better serve China's high-level opening-up initiatives.

In recent years, the development of smart ports has become a powerful driver for the high-quality growth of Shanghai's ports. Luojing Port, the most advanced automated terminal in China, is filled with gantry cranes and rail-mounted cranes towering over the docks, while automated unmanned container transporters move containers around the terminal. The equipment and vehicles essential for terminal operations, such as shore cranes, rail-mounted cranes, automated intelligent vehicles (AIVs), forklifts, and inspection vehicles, are all powered by electricity.

Unlike the automated guided vehicles (AGVs) at the fourth phase of Yangshan Port, the AIVs at Luojing Port operate without the need for magnetic guidance tracks on the ground. Instead, they rely on technologies like Beidou navigation and 5G, utilizing vehicle perception and recognition systems along with algorithms for identification and navigation.

This development underscores Shanghai's commitment to innovation and sustainability in its port operations, further solidifying its position as a leading international shipping hub.
