Pudong New Area in East China's Shanghai set its economic and social development goals for this year, according to the government work report released at the third session of the 7th Pudong New Area People's Congress, which kicked off on Jan 5.

In the past year, Pudong has effectively coordinated COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control measures with economic and social development in the midst of global changes and a pandemic that hasn't been seen in a century.

In the face of a volatile external environment and disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pudong's economy saw a V-shape recovery last year. The area’s GDP is expected to increase by about 2 percentage points more than the city's overall GDP, and the output value of industrial enterprises above designated size is expected to grow by 3.6 percent in 2022, reaching about 1.33 trillion yuan ($193.8 billion). Total foreign trade was estimated at 2.43 trillion yuan last year, an increase of 2 percent year-on-year, which serves as an anchor for overall economic and social stability.

This year will see the implementation of measures put forth by the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Pudong will stay committed to a Chinese path of modernization and promote high-quality development.

According to its government work report, Pudong has set its GDP growth target at about 7 percent for 2023, and the total output value of industries above designated size is expected to reach 1.37 trillion yuan.

This year, Pudong will focus on advancing its national development strategy and building a modern economic system to achieve high-quality economic and social development. Efforts will also be made to improve its urban management and public services. In addition, Pudong will place enormous stress on the ecology and environment to promote harmonious coexistence between man and nature and build a more beautiful Pudong.
