Shanghai, one of the birthplaces of China's chip industry, recorded 58.67 billion yuan ($8.34 billion) in the sales of integrated circuits (IC) in the first half of this year, up 12.9 percent year on year, according to statistics from the Shanghai Integrated Circuit Industry Association.

The sales revenue of the IC industry in Pudong New Area rose 21.5 percent year on year, accounting for 73.4 percent of the city's total.

Zhangjiang High-Tech Park, the largest chip manufacturing base in Pudong, is at the forefront of artificial intelligence chip design. The sales revenue of Zhangjiang's IC industry totaled 36.5 billion yuan in the first six months, up 15.6 percent year on year, accounting for 62 percent of Shanghai's total.

Seven Chinese companies made the 2018 A-List in the AI Chipset Index released by Compass Intelligence, including VeriSilicon, a chip service provider from Zhangjiang who focuses on interconnected devices, data centers, the internet of things, automobiles, and industrial and medical devices.

Aside from the industry leaders, rookie enterprises in the chip design industry have also established themselves with new products and designs.

Shenzhen Corerain Technologies, a startup focusing on AI-enabled chips and development platform solutions introduced a new artificial intelligence development platform this year which supports AI applications to chip architectures.

Over the years, China has been increasing investment and support for the semiconductor industry, especially when it comes to high-value-added chip design.
