Zhangjiang: a vibrant hub for science and technological innovation

Shanghai Medtrum Technologies Inc, a company dedicated to developing medical devices for diabetes management, topped the diabetes device market in terms of the number of patent applications over the past 10 years. The company's core products have even made their way into the European market.

Founded in Zhangjiang in 2008, the company is valued at more than 1 billion yuan.

"We chose to set up shop in Zhangjiang because the area has everything needed for startups, including mature industrial chains and a pool of talents to get the company off the ground," said Fu Bin, one of the founders of Charpie Intelligence Technology Co, a leading remotely-operated vehicle producer in China.

Driven by industrial and technological development, incubators are by no means facilitators in any specific domain, but are there to help companies achieve breakthroughs in biomedicine, traditional manufacturing, energy, and transportation by leveraging the new generation of information technologies.

Since the beginning of this year, two innovative platforms, including JLABS@Shanghai, an incubator site for startup companies launched by US healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson, and an artificial intelligence and internet of things lab of US technology giant Microsoft Corporation have been put into operation in Zhangjiang Science City.
