What started out as ordinary farmland 27 years ago has been transformed into Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, a vibrant center of scientific and technological innovation.

Last August, the Shanghai municipal government approved a plan to turn Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in Pudong into a so-called "science city" with about 700,000 residents, including scientists, entrepreneurs and professionals.

The new science city covers an area of 94 square kilometers and aims to compete with the USA's Silicon Valley, Singapore's One North science park and the Japanese Tsukuba scientific town.

Latest figures reveal that Zhangjiang is now home to 70 unicorns (a privately held startup company valued at over $1 billion), over 50 high-growth companies, and 2,500 startups, which attract a total of nearly 100 billion yuan ($14.51 billion) in active capital per year.

Two of the 25 companies listed on China's science-technology innovation board, also called the STAR Market, are based in Zhangjiang.
