Zhangjiang National Lab to begin operations
Plans were made during a Dec 25 conference on Shanghai's technology and intellectual property to establish the Zhangjiang National Laboratory.
Zhangjiang's Science and Technology Commission had previously arranged further development by applying select technological devices owned by Zhangjiang National Science Center.
Zhangjiang's current projects – ultrashort lasers, soft X-ray freedom electron lasers, living cell structures and imaging – have progressed smoothly and yielded impressive results.
Development of hard X-ray freedom electron laser technology has already been approved and will soon start its research phase. Total investment rose to 61.9 billion yuan ($9.5 billion) at the end of 2016.
Joining the list of national strategic projects, the integrated circuit industry will be a key research focus at Zhangjiang's national lab.
Zhangjiang's recent development of photon devices has proven the region is also strong in life sciences.
In the future, Shanghai will focus its research on brain science, particularly the aiding and augmenting of human intelligence with technology.
