Zhangjiang needs to improve public transport infrastructure
Zhangjiang must solve its accessibility issues as the city progresses, experts say.
"With the fast development of Zhangjiang Science Park, its area has expanded to 94 square kilometers. Most of the land now lies outside the city center," Prof. Chen Xiaohong, an engineering professor from Tongji University, said.
He was one of the experts speaking at a forum held on Dec 7 on the future of Zhangjiang Science Park's public transport infrastructure.
The city has expanded rapidly since the tech park established in 1992. Although the Planning of the Construction of Zhangjiang Science Park, an infrastructure masterplan, was implemented in 2017, problems still remain. There are insufficient roads to cater to high traffic; the current network does not reach all places; and sometimes it is difficult to get from one place to another.
The new transportation framework should also fulfil today's needs, Prof. Chen added.
Chen Long, director of the research center of transportation said the future transport infrastructure should consider people's commuting habits. For example, as an increasing number of people travel by train, more rail lines should be built to ease the traffic load.
