Shanghai FTZ eyes strong start to 2026

The China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone has set ambitious goals for 2026 at a leaders' meeting, aiming for a strong start to the year with focused efforts and fast progress.

Last year saw a number of significant achievements thanks to supportive policies from the central government, making Shanghai FTZ a hotspot for innovation and high-quality growth. As 2026 marks the start of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), leaders have stressed the need for hard work and strategic focus to achieve new breakthroughs.

Key priorities include introducing meaningful reforms and improving the business environment to set an example for broader changes. Shanghai FTZ aims to become a global hub for resource allocation by aligning with international trade standards, expanding its service sector, and boosting cross-border business.

The meeting also highlighted the need to integrate industrial and innovation chains, using technology to drive economic growth. Leaders plan to expand successful pilot projects into larger initiatives and enhance legislative efforts in Pudong New Area.

Government departments have been encouraged to seize opportunities, enhance services, and foster industrial growth to ensure effective implementation of reforms and sustained progress.
