China's first foreign-owned hospital thrives in Pudong
As the first wholly foreign-owned hospital in China, Shanghai Towako Hospital, which was established in the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone in 2015, has gained significant development momentum thanks to a series of effective policies to deepen reform and opening-up in the FTZ.
Since its inception, the hospital has provided medical services to over 300,000 patients, with 2,277 babies born through assisted reproductive treatments, solidifying its position as a specialized healthcare facility offering comprehensive reproductive solutions at affordable rates.
The establishment of this pioneering foreign-owned medical facility was made possible by the pilot policies allowing foreign-owned medical institutions in the Shanghai FTZ, initiated in September 2013 to enhance high-end medical services in the city. This move not only facilitated the entry of top-tier healthcare institutions into the metropolis but also paved the way for the foreign-owned hospital to set up base in Pudong New Area.
During the process, the management committee of the pilot free trade zone proactively assisted the hospital by offering leased premises through the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone Group, alleviating space constraints. Additionally, the committee spearheaded project coordination meetings to address practical challenges during the hospital's construction phase, ensuring a smooth establishment process.
The development of Shanghai Towako Hospital stands as a testament to Shanghai's commitment to fostering a vibrant environment that caters to diverse needs and promotes the growth of the medical industry in the pilot free trade zone.
