'Giorgio Morandi. Solo' opens at MAP as largest exhibition this century
Shanghai's Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) opened Giorgio Morandi. Solo on June 16, marking what is described as the world's largest Morandi-focused exhibition of the 21st century. Featuring more than 200 works, the exhibition opens to the public on June 17.
Co-presented with the Morandi Museum in Bologna, the exhibition brings together over 30 institutions and private collectors worldwide, presenting more than 140 original works spanning oil paintings, etchings, watercolors, and drawings.
Occupying the museum's second-floor galleries, the exhibition reconstructs Morandi's contemplative visual universe, presenting his still lifes alongside personal objects, studio materials, and rare portraits. The curatorial approach seeks to gently challenge fixed readings of his practice and open new interpretive perspectives.
The design of the exhibition space further reinforces this immersive intent. Lowered ceilings, softly toned Morandi-inspired walls, and carefully calibrated natural lighting encourage visitors to slow down, observe, and compare subtle variations in tone and form under changing light conditions.
Among the highlights are objects from Morandi's studio, including bottles, tins, and artificial flowers displayed alongside the corresponding paintings. Together, they reveal the quiet dialogue between reality and representation that defines his visual language and the subtle shifts in perception it invites.

As the most comprehensive Morandi presentation this century, the exhibition spans his early engagement with modernist influences through to his later, more abstract-leaning works, tracing the evolution of his artistic language across more than 30 thematic sections with a cohesive overall narrative.
Curator Lorenzo Balbi noted Morandi's popularity in China now surpasses that in Europe, while curator D'Arelli highlighted how Chinese audiences respond strongly to the artist's contemplative atmosphere and subtle philosophical resonance embedded in his work, reflecting a deeply perceptive mode of engagement.
