Major exhibitions fill Pudong's cultural calendar
A lineup of exhibitions is set to debut across Shanghai's Pudong New Area, promising cultural experiences for visitors all year round.
From mid-March to mid-July, Shanghai Museum East will host a major exhibition of portraits and iconic works by British writers, marking the first exhibition on the Chinese mainland by the London-based National Portrait Gallery.
A total of 135 exhibits will be presented in China for the first time. Highlights include the only authenticated lifetime portrait of William Shakespeare, the original manuscript of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, as well as portraits and manuscripts of 82 literary masters such as Jane Austen and Arthur Conan Doyle.
Another highlight at the museum is an exhibition marking the 400th anniversary of Bada Shanren, a 17th-century master artist. Scheduled to run from December 2026 to March 2027, it will be the largest-ever exhibition of Bada Shanren's calligraphy and paintings, bringing together around 180 works or sets from more than 20 institutions.
Running through August, the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum's "Galloping Wonders" Year of the Horse Science and Culture Special Exhibition features more than 20 horse-themed cultural relics from the Palace Museum, along with over 10 rare horse specimens and bionic horses.
