The 24th Shanghai International Film Festival kicked off at the Shanghai International Resort in Pudong New Area on June 12. The event will run until June 20.

Despite the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic around the world, SIFF received 4,443 film applications from 113 countries and areas this year, the most in its history. Of the 400 showcase films, 73 will be making their world premiere at SIFF.

During the event, a number of key film and TV cultural enterprises signed agreements to open branches at Shanghai International Resort.

One of the highlight events of the festival, the Belt and Road Film Week, received 1,136 film applications this year. Twenty of these outstanding productions will be screened during the festival, six of which will be shown for the first time in six cinemas outside Shanghai and in the Yangtze River Delta region.

This year's film week will further integrate with the advancement of the film and television industry, the integration of the Yangtze River Delta, as well as the integration of business, travel, and cultural development, aiming to build a communication platform for international film and television resources.

During the opening ceremony, the results of the 5G digital film and television creation cloud platform and the White Paper on Chinese Film Digital Production Standards were released.

As this year marks the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, the festival will present a special showcase of revolutionary-themed films that have been popular with Chinese audiences through the decades.
