Deals for 20 innovative artificial intelligence (AI) projects that are set for Shanghai were signed on Sept 17, at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference being held in the city.

The projects include an AI industrial fund, three AI research institutes, eight AI innovation platforms, and eight AI innovation centers.

The fund, co-invested by Shanghai Guohe Capital, Venture Capital Guiding Fund of Songjiang and several other capital firms, will be launched to support the AI industry in the G60 science and innovation corridor, which spans across nine Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Jiaxing and Hangzhou and serves as an AI industrial hub in the Yangtze River Delta region.

The research institutes are being built by Amazon Web Service (AWS), Microsoft, and iFLYTEK respectively. The AWS research institute will bring together the world's leading AI talents to develop learning frameworks for the development of AI. Meanwhile, Microsoft's will focus on research in generic technology in the AI sector, and iFLYTEK's institute will target brain science.

The innovation platform, backed by JD.com, Tencent, Huawei, Shanghai Electrical Apparatus Research Institute, SUPCON, the Institute of Neuroscience, CloudMinds, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, covers a wide range of fields featuring smart cities, cloud technology, robotics, and brain science, amongst others.

Backers of the innovation centers include ARM China, Alibaba, SenseTime, Xiaopeng Auto, Baidu, ULSee, and Fudan University.

The arrival of those projects in Shanghai can be attributed to the strong support by the local government for the AI industry and the city's abundant AI resources. Last year, the city released new guidelines to promote the development of the AI industry.
