Xi'an artists put on a Chinese shadow puppetry performance in Pudong Library on Feb 21, attracting a lot of visitors.

The play includes the fight and verbal quarrel between Zhu Bajie and Monkey King, characters from the Journey to the West, one of the four Chinese classic literatures.

Others performances are Carp Jumps over the Dragon Gate and the Race between Hare and Tortoise.

A shadow puppet play is a form of folk opera that involves cutting animal skin or hard paper into figures and using them in a performance in front of an illuminated backdrop to create an illusion of moving images.

Accompanied by live music, performers behind the screen move the figures while narrating a story to a local tune.

After the performance, audience went to the stage to try their hands on manipulating the figures to have a first-hand experience of the traditional culture.
