Zhangjiang Science City

Zhangjiang Science City, formerly known as the Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park, was established in July 1992. It now has a total area of 95 square kilometers, and is expected to be expanded to about 220 sq km during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) .

A number of high-end industries have settled in Zhangjiang, including integrated circuit (IC), bio-pharmaceutical and software service companies. Zhangjiang has also given great support to new industries, businesses and technology.

Characteristic industries

Zhangjiang is now home to more than 18,000 enterprises, including 53 regional headquarters of multinational companies, and 828 high-tech enterprises. It currently has cultivated a number of leading industries focusing on information technology and biomedicine, and has gathered a batch of internationally renowned technology enterprises such as Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp, chipmaker Huahong Group, Roche Group, Shanghai MicroPort Medical (Group), and Hutchmed. Currently, Zhangjiang Science City is beefing up efforts to build a world-class high-tech industrial cluster to lead its industrial development.

IC industry

A comprehensive and internationally competitive IC industrial cluster has been taking shape in Zhangjiang, and its total sales revenue of its IC industry reached 201.1 billion yuan ($29.2 billion) in 2022, growing by 18.1 percent year-on-year and accounting for two thirds of Shanghai's total.

Over the past three decades, Zhangjiang has fostered the most complete industrial chain in the IC industry, with a total of 307 related enterprises settling in the area, including a number of world-leading IC enterprises. Six of the world's top 10 chip designers have set up regional headquarters and research and development (R&D) centers in Zhangjiang, and three of China's top 10 chip designers are headquartered in Zhangjiang.

Biomedicine industry

Zhangjiang is home to a comprehensive innovative biomedicine industrial chain, which encompasses R&D, screening and evaluation, clinical research, scaling-up, registration and certification, and mass production.

It currently is home to more than 400 bio-medicine companies, 20 large-scale medical producers, 300 small- and medium-size sci-tech companies, 40 contract research organizations, and 100 R&D institutes. At present, seven of the world's top 10 pharmaceutical enterprises have set up regional headquarters and R&D centers in Zhangjiang. Statistics showed that in 2022, the total revenue of biomedicine industry in Zhangjiang was 132 billion yuan, up 7.5 percent year-on-year, and accounted for one sixth of the city.

Innovation ecology

Zhangjiang now boasts 440 national, municipal and district-level R&D institutions, such as the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, National Center for Protein Science, Shanghai Supercomputer Center, as well as nearly 20 universities and scientific research institutions, such as the ShanghaiTech University, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute.

At present, there are 370,000 employees in Zhangjiang, and more than 6,200 have doctoral degrees, and over 50,000 have master's degrees.
