Zhangjiang Science City covers an area of 79.9 square kilometers, with 40 sq km of Core Area, 26.88 sq km of Kangqiao Industrial Park, 11.78 sq km of International Medical Zone and 3.77 sq km of Zhoupu Fanrong Industrial Area.

A number of high-end industries have settled in Zhangjiang, including integrated circuit, bio-pharmaceutical and software service companies, who give great support to new industries, business forms, technology and models. The Core Area also boasts more than 400 research and development institutions, employing more than 50,000 researchers with a master's degree or PhD as well as 12 work stations for 40 professors and academicians.

Information technology industry

The revenue of the IT sector exceeded 50 billion yuan ($ 7.39 billion), accounting for 14 percent of the national total.

The software and information service sector is bolstered by a large group of renowned software companies and R&D institutions from home and abroad.

Pharmaceutical industry

Zhangjiang is home to a comprehensive innovative pharmaceutical industrial chain, encompassing research and development, screening and evaluation, clinical research, scaling-up, registration and certification, and mass production.

It currently gathers more than 400 bio-medicine companies, 20 large-scale medical producers, 300 small- and medium-size sci-tech companies, 40 contract research organizations, and 100 R&D institutes.

Integrated circuit industry

A comprehensive and internationally-competitive IC industrial cluster has been taking shape in Zhangjiang, with total industrial revenue reaching 102.79 billion yuan ($15.73 billion) in 2020.

Six of the world's top 10 chip design companies have already set up regional headquarters or research and development centers in Zhangjiang, and four of China's top 10 chip design companies are headquartered there, while another three have branches operating in the area.

Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility

The Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility is one of the biggest scientific projects in China and is involved in scientific research at the frontier of various fields, including life sciences, new materials, physics, chemistry, environmental sciences and archaeology.

The facility operates 7,000 hours a year and has more than 20,000 users, including nearly 100 from overseas, mainly the Republic of Korea, Japan, Australia and Canada. 

As of December 2019, the facility had served for more than 660,000 hours and 6,110 projects of 342 institutes from home and abroad. Its users have published 1,027 essays in Scientific Citation Index journals.
