Zhangjiang Science City in Shanghai's Pudong New Area recently revealed plans to build a cell therapy industrial park.

Zhangjiang is among the most promising areas in China when it comes to developing the cell therapy industry, thanks to its vast medical industry resources, such as the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center, National Children's Medical Center and Shanghai International Medical Center.

Over the next few years, Zhangjiang will focus on developing the cell industry, upgrading the area's medical industry, and becoming a world-class cell industry innovation center by 2030, according to the plan.

The park will develop a supporting platform for the integration of clinical demand, R&D, manufacturing and application.

As of January 2019, six of the 10 CAR-T (a type of cell therapy) projects that have been approved for clinical trials in China are based in Zhangjiang, and three of the four global CAR-T giants have already set up bases in the area.

Additionally, more than 20 cell therapy enterprises have settled in Zhangjiang to date, accounting for about 50 percent of Shanghai's total.

It is estimated that the global stem cell market will reach $400 billion by 2020, and CAR-T cell therapy is expected to reach $8.5 billion by 2028.
