Shanghai's Pudong New Area is facing an acute shortage of professional talents in the bio-pharmaceutical industry, according to a talent index report from the area.

The survey, based on 2,046 correspondents, indicates that despite the slightly lower percentages of job shortages across industries in 2018, there is a growing demand for talents in bio-pharmaceutical, information services and trade service industries, and especially in bio-pharmaceuticals.

Addressing the talent crunch, Wang Wanpeng, general manager of the talent market of Pudong New Area said that genetic engineers and engineers working on the research and development of new products are urgently needed.

An emerging R&D hub for new drugs in the country, Zhangjiang has attracted over 400 bio-pharmaceutical companies. In 2017, the scale of Zhangjiang's bio-pharmaceutical industry reached 63.3 billion yuan ($9.2 billion), accounting for 62 percent of all industries in Pudong.
