The 2017 China Shanghai Smart City Innovation Development Summit opened at Shanghai International Convention Center on Dec 8, bringing experts together to discuss how to develop Shanghai into a smart city.

Zhang Ying, chief engineer of Shanghai Municipal Economic and Informatization Commission said that artificial intelligence (AI) has been playing a key role in pushing forward Shanghai's innovation, economic transformation, upgrading and social governance.

At present, artificial intelligence has already found wide application in many areas. For example, Shanghai High People's Court has applied AI technology to judicial procedures to enhance judicial efficiency and credibility. Also, some hospitals have used AI to improve the precision of medical treatment and even invented AI-equipped robots to assist surgical procedures. In addition, technologies such as facial recognition and voice recognition have been adopted by some administrative service agencies.

It is predicted that by 2020, a top-level AI demonstration area will have been completed in Pudong, with government bodies fully involved in its application and management. By that time, AI technologies will have hopefully made the city management smarter and more effective. Meanwhile, different industries will closely collaborate with each other to raise industrial output.

At the summit, Shanghai Pudong Smart City Research Institute proposed building a global smart city innovation center in Shanghai to attract highly-skilled workers to help develop the smart city.
