According to a report from a forum which took place on Dec 8 regarding the protection of Pudong's environment, an ongoing beautification project has been highly successful and is set to be expanded.

At present, five sub-districts- Lujiazui, Yangjing, Weifang, Tangqiao and Huamu - have been designated as an experimental area for the project.

Specifically, the project involves the renovation of several public areas, such as streets, parks, athletic tracks, infrastructure, art spaces, boulevards and sports venues. Also, the walls in some places have been removed to provide openings and make the communities more close-knit.

According to Ni Qian, secretary of the Party working committee of Pudong, all the measures are aimed at enabling local residents to enjoy a pleasant and healthy living environment, and the project has received much public support.

It is not only the specific measures that are noteworthy, but also the process of devising the measures. For example, Pudong hired experts to provide guidance on how to beautify the environment. In addition, local residents also have a say in decision making.

According to a three-year action plan, five more ancient communities as well as 20 more items of infrastructure will be renovated. Meanwhile, an additional 21 small parks, athletic tracks covering 40 kilometers, and lanes totaling 20 km will be built.
